Himalayan Encyclopedia Project
Encyclopedia of Himalayan Buddhist Culture Project was envisaged to cover all the important aspects of Buddhist culture in the extensive Himalayan region. These extensive regions include India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. It was natural to start the work with the Indian part of the region. These regions are Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Darjeeling-Kalimpong and Arunachal Pradesh. It was decided to begin the Project with Ladakh region of UT-Ladakh.
The project is fully funded by the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India the approval strength of one Chief Editor, Two Editors and three Research Assistants. After the approval of the above posts in October 2004, the work on the Project officially started in May 2004 with the appointment of Prof Ramesh Chandra Tewari as the Chief Editor and Dr Pradeep Kumar Das as Editor.

Vol-II Ladakh: 7 years (completed and published)
Vol-III Himachal Pradesh: 5 years (completed and ready for Publication after an Overview by scholars)
Vol-IV Uttarakhand: 5 years (Present Assignment started in October 2022)
Vol-V Darjeeling- Kalimpong (W.Bengal) 5 years (next assignment)
Vol-VI Sikkim: 5 years (next assignment)
Vol-VII Arunachal Pradesh: 5 years (next assignment)
Vol-VIII Nepal: 7 years (next assignment)
Vol-IX Bhutan: 6 years (next assignment)
Manuscript Mission Centre
As designated Manuscripts Resource Centre and Manuscripts Conservation Centre by the National Mission for Manuscripts, Govt of India for the Ladakh region, CIBS is carrying out the assigned job by engaging Resource Persons (RPs) on contractual basis. At present, three RPs are working on the project. The Centre has conserved 52221 folios of manuscripts with documentation of 37421 manuscripts from 2384 different monasteries, palaces and individuals. The entire expenditure is borne by the National Mission for Manuscripts, Govt of India.

Publications:
The Research Department of the institute publishes rare and valuable books on various subjects including the proceedings of national and international seminars (Ladakh-Prabha) and scholarly writings (Ladakh Journal). The institute also has initiated an annual National Journal of Buddhist Studies in English. The books are sold for minimal rates from the institute.
In addition, the students also publish monthly newsletters in Bhoti, English and Hindi languages. An annual tri-lingual students’ magazine is published under the title of Rig-pa’i Dud-tsi. A monthly students’ newsletter sLob-ma’i dGa-tsal in Bhoti and sGrol-lJang gi sGron-me also in Bhoti by Green Tara Girls’ hostels are being published.
